Whale Watchers is a feature film about three generations of strong-willed women who clash over their unresolved history and their family’s relationship with whales.

SYNOPSIS:

When Edda, a Black 15-year-old gets kicked out of her high school for social media activism, her mother, Kiteri “Kit” Harris, must take Edda along to her coastal Georgia hometown for her work. Kit’s law partnership is guaranteed if she can convince the locals to accept oil exploration along their coast. Unfortunately, this puts Kit in direct conflict with her own mother, Maggie, the leader of the Whale Watchers, and her daughter’s newfound interest in north Atlantic right whales and their new baby calves. 

While on her uncle’s boat, Edda has a rare “eye to eye” encounter with a whale named Fermata and her calf. When Grandma Maggie finds out that Kit’s lobbying for oil exploration, its all-out war between them. The battle plays out at a town council meeting when Kit wins the town over with the possibility of jobs. 

Determined to save Fermata and her calf, Edda runs away. Maggie and Kit try to catch up as Edda gains notoriety, posting videos and interviewing whale experts and ocean advocates as she follows the whale migration. When Maggie and Kit are sure Edda’s next move is a ferry to Canada, they move to head her off, but law enforcement finds her first. Kit shows up as Edda’s attorney, but in her role as “mom,” she has an epiphany about what really matters. Edda brokers a truce between Kit and Maggie, and the family finally joins forces. In Washington D.C., Kit’s testimony takes a revolutionary twist. The three generations make a fresh start, working together for the whales.
